Young Labor Tasmania Endorses Rebecca White’s pre-selection as Labor
Candidate for Lyons
28 March 2009
The Tasmanian Branch of Australian Young Labor (AYL) strongly supports and endorses Rebecca White as a future Labor candidate for Lyons.
AYL State President, Stuart Benson, said Ms White – who is currently President of the Southern Regional Committee of AYL – is understood to be the only AYL member seeking pre-selection.
“Young Labor members in Tasmania know what a strong advocate Rebecca White, a former Vice-President of the Tasmanian branch of AYL, will be for the people of Lyons,” Mr Benson said.
“Rebecca has always worked with energy and vigour and I know that she will bring fresh ideas to parliament if pre-selected and then elected.
“Her selection as a candidate would illustrate a renewal of the Labor team in Tasmania. Being a young, female candidate Rebecca offers a refreshing alternative for voters in Lyons.
“Young Labor is disappointed the Tasmanian Liberals have endorsed six middle-aged men for Lyons. For reasons best known to them they have endorsed no women or young people.”
Mr Benson said: “Young Labor believes young people are under-represented in the Tasmanian Parliament. Pre-selecting Rebecca White will give Tasmanians the opportunity to elect a reinvigorated and more dynamic Tasmanian parliament in 2010.
“Rebecca has a strong understanding of, and connection to, the electorate, having grown up on her parents’ farm in Nugent and attending school in Sorell. She has built her own home in the electorate, demonstrating her long-term commitment.”
“Young Labor Tasmania is hopeful Rebecca White will win pre-selection and looks forward to fully supporting her campaign in Lyons.”
