Young Labor is the youth wing of the Australian Labor Party. Members of the ALP between the ages of 15 to 26 are eligible to join Young Labor. Young Labor has a vital role to play, as it is the youth voice of the ALP, representing the needs and ideas of young people to the party. Young Labor has its own conferences and annual meeting to discuss policy and promote policy directions in the ALP. Tasmanian Young Labor engages in grass-roots politics, from campaigning to elect Labor governments to participating in public rallies. As well as providing a forum for young people to voice and debate ideas and policies, we offer opportunities for you to socialise and interact with other likeminded people in a friendly environment. We aim to provide young people with the skills and experiences to help further their activism in the Labor Party. Involvement in Tasmanian Young Labor has provided the building blocks for many people to go on to become parliamentarians, policy and media advisors, trade union activists and leading election campaigners. At forums, tours and conferences you get a chance to meet significant political icons and other inspiring Australian’s who believe in Labor ideals. Attending conferences, Young Labor Associations and the range of other events gives you a great understanding of how the party and politics work. Many members go on to successful careers in politics and the union movement, using the contacts and skills they acquired in Young Labor. Young Labor members share a social democratic outlook on the world, and stand by a conviction that Labor governments are better economic managers than our conservative opponents. Many current and former Young Labor members joined the party because they did not like the direction Australia or Tasmania was heading and wanted to be part of a movement that makes people’s lives worth living. Pressure groups can only pressure Governments but they cannot change it. Only party politics can directly affect the people who run the country, or change government policy for better. If you want a career in politics or want to make a difference that’s why it’s worth being involved in Young Labor. |
